Mythical?

Ever heard of the Chupacabra? Neither had I but I know about it now thanks to the lady who organised my photoshoot with the Killa Hurtz Roller Derby team, Kelli Chupaclarkbra Clark, the team Liaison Exec.

So onto todays lesson.  Chupacabra is a fearsome creature 'known' for attacking livestock in South America and drinking their blood.  It has been sighted in Mexico and Puerto Rico.

So let's look at the characteristics:

  • Drinks blood
  • Hunts defenceless creatures
  • Disappears without a trace

Almost perfect skills for a life in roller derby them ;-)

You can't say you weren't warned.

Amazingly fantastic

Those two words are the inspiration (I'm guessing here) for the great name of our next member of the Killa Hurtz Roller Derby team, Yaz Amataz.

I like the fact that there are no rules in the names - they don't have to be real words (although their very use, you could argue, makes them real, um bit deep Pete let's move on) but it is the image they convey that is important.

So it you were due to skate against Yaz and she was amazing then that would be one thing but stop, wait a moment, she is amazing AND fantastic?  Hell I didn't sign on for that.  Let me out.

This is one tough team.

Super, sick, nasty, cool and narley

Combine the above and you get 'snarley' according to the Urban Dictionary.  Combine them with the following member of the Killa Hurtz Roller Derby team and you get Snarley-Quinn.

All of the words in the headline are to be take as positives - I'm sure if you have kids of a certain age you've head the term sick being used to mean good.

However for a derby skater I suspect you don't want the positive undertones to be too obvious - after all you have a rival team to intimidate, sorry, beat.

Snarley-Quinn - she's phat.

Fancy rat

Just like my shoots with people with tattoos I have been enjoying discovering the backgrounds to each member of the Killa Hurtz Roller Derby team.

For Rattybabe I was a little puzzled until I read her profile on the groups site and it refers back to her having kept and showed rats for 10 years.

What I liked most was clearly how proud she was for embarking on a new activity and finding a new group of pals.  I'd like to think they are a little better on the conversational front than her previous companions.

 Every name has a story.

The fast and the furious

As my morning portrait shoot progressed with the Killa Hurtz Roller Derby team I met more and more of the team and was struggling with names.

Quite how I couldn't remember Jet Blackhearts name is beyond me - I mean take a look - it's spot on isn't it?

I like the balance in the name - fast from jet and furious from Blackheart. I'm not sure that leaves much room for any kind of weakness really.

Too fast and too furious?  There's only one way to find out ;-)
