Work in progress

Krystal is part way through her tattoo sleeve on her right arm but already the effects are pretty impressive.

I'm hoping to shoot with her again in a few weeks time and by then the rest of the work should be done and well on its way to healing.

I enjoy working with tattoo models and seeing how their tattoos and their look evolves - it is like observing a work of art being created over a period of months and finally seeing the vision come together with the final stokes.

I may not know much about art but I know what I like.

Do you feel lucky punk?

Liz rocks the punk hairstyle look and manages the Dirty Harry attitude nicely as well.

Yet the reality could not be further from the truth and therein lies the challenge. How do you take a creative artist and lovely person and turn them into a killer bidding their time to perform an act of vengeance? (got a bit carried away there sorry)

For this shoot we had the story (assassin), we moved locations (see previous blog posts) but we always kept Liz in character. She was always doing what the character would be do. If she believed she was an assassin sworn on revenge then you will.

In all this excitement I kinda lost track myself.

Too hot for colour

Another fashion portrait of the lovely female model Krystal Johns from last weekends fashion photoshoot at Dieselpunk Studios.

The star of this shot is Krystals fantastic expression and the supporting pose.  The issue was the colour background was too distracting - too blue and it had to go.  By converting the image to black & white the only star of the show is Krystal herself.

I've pushed this shot as much as I can as far as the contrast is concerned but I think the final effect is worth it.

Black and white it may be but it burns bright enough.

Trick or treat?

Quite often people will talk about photo processing as cheating - there have been some howlers (Kate Winslett on the cover of GQ for example) where processing has altered the state of the subject a little too much.

Yet you might argue that the ultimate processing is to remove the colour from an image as I have done below.  Colour is real and black & white is not.  Yet for all that I remain a huge fan of black & white portrait photography especially when it can take a cool fashion portrait and give it a halloween edge.

Working with Liz is always a treat and I am looking forward to our next shoot in a few weeks time.

Are you giving me the eye?

We continue the shots from my fantastic portrait shoot with Liz.

We had so many great moments we decide to play and break some rules (portraits typically look to capture both eyes) and so we used Liz's hands to act as a tunnel drawing you into a single eye.

I also felt  drawn to a black & white portrait treatment for this image - trying to remove all the distractions possible i.e. colour.

Beauty is in the eye of the holder - I am sure that's the expression right?
